The power of the tongue

The power of the tongue

Proverbs 18:21 “What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words.” In church today I was reminded of this verse. The power that the tongue has – we can speak life or we can speak death. We can speak positive things or negative things. Funny how easily we say something so negative without noticing. For example: today we visited friends, and I was chatting with the 10 year old girl, who had amazing ideas for my business, as we agreed upon new ideas she wrote them down – might I add she spelled everything correct. The one word that was quite tricky, she wrote down, turned up to me and said: “I probably spelled it wrong right?”, on which I replied “no, you spelled it right but in future ask me ‘did I spell this word right?’ instead of immediately assuming it is wrong and asking it as such.” Her mom agreed and we realised that we too often take ourselves for granted and proclaim falsehood over our lives. This year, be in control of your thoughts and mouth – Romans asks us to renew our mind daily – we have the gift of free will (Read: Freedom in a captive world), thus we have to choose to ask God to help us be positive, to see life positive, to not hold on to negative thoughts, that become negative words, that become negative truths. We have to speak life. The verse continues to say that if we love to speak we will bare the consequences. I always thought of it as a negative connotation, but here is the thing – if we speak life we will bare consequences of life – positive consequences, and the same for the contrary. So what do you choose today: Life or death?
